Lab
Group Gets “Hot Pick”
Honor at Annual Meeting
A
powerful cellular self-defense mechanism against
breast cancer developed at Berkeley Lab was among
the five “Hot Picks” selected from
the more than 400 “late abstracts”
recently presented at the American Society for
Cell Biology’s annual meeting. Lab scientists
Rosanne Boudreau, Ben Engel, Mark
LeGros, Carolyn Larabell, and Paul
Alivisatos received the honor for their work
on “Mammary Epithelial Acini Induce Apoptosis
in Breast Tumor Cells.” Full
story.
An Art Party
With a Twist
by
Carolyne Zinko
When
young supporters of San Francisco's Museum of
Modern Art needed a big spot for a towering piece
of artwork created for their party, a furniture
store seemed like the perfect gallery. Featured
at the party was, "Ribet": an 18-foot-tall
wall of corrugated, sliced white plastic which
meandered like a lazy stream, creating a maze
to walk through. The structure took 2 1/2 weeks
to design, from computer blueprints to the selection
of materials, to the cutting of shapes with water
jets at Berkeley Lab. Full
story.

Cafeteria
Will Be
Open Tomorrow
Yesterday’s
edition of “Today at Berkeley Lab” incorrectly
stated that the cafeteria would not be open on Friday
due to a special function. The cafeteria will be open
tomorrow for breakfast and lunch. We regret the error.

Limited
Bus Service
Briefly This Afternoon
Laboratory
bus service will be interrupted briefly this afternoon
so drivers can attend a holiday party. From 2 to
3:30 p.m., only one bus will run on a round-trip
downtown and through the Lab every 40 minutes. At
2, 2:40 and 3:20, it will leave the Building 65
stop and travel the Bancroft route to downtown BART,
then return via Hearst and Centennial Drive to the
Strawberry gate and Buildings 62-66. It will then
go through the Lab and back to 65. Regular service
resumes at 3:30.
Holiday Schedule For
Paycheck Distribution
Lab
employees who don’t have electronic deposit
may pick up their December paychecks from 10 a.m.
to noon in Building 69-102, on Friday, Dec. 26,
for bi-weekly-paid employees, and on Wednesday,
Dec. 31 for monthly-paid employees. Photo ID will
be required. Paychecks not picked up will be mailed
to Lab offices for receipt on Jan. 2. Direct bank
deposit advice forms will be mailed on Dec. 23,
though some employees may not receive them before
the holiday shutdown. Go here
to view your paycheck data online.
Update
Name and
Address Info Soon
Employees
who have moved or changed their name during the
last year, and have not sent this information
to the Lab’s Human Resources office, should
do so before Jan. 16 to ensure receipt of 2003
W2 forms. To make this change, visit the Employee
Self Service website. Employees with an international
address or without access to the Internet should
contact their HR Center for assistance.
