Happy
Birthday to
Our D.C. Office
The
National Center for Electron Microscopy and the
Advanced Light Source aren’t the only groups
celebrating anniversaries this month. The Lab’s
Washington D.C. Projects Office has also reached
a significant milestone: its 10th birthday. The
15-person office is hosting a reception tomorrow
to mark the event, which will include a display
of commemorative posters and a talk by Deputy Director
Sally Benson (via video conference).
Representatives from the Environmental Protection
Agency and the Department of Energy are among the
invited guests. The D.C. office works closely with
Washington-based research sponsors to help Lab researchers
design and conduct projects that best meet the sponsor’s
needs.

Accident
Review: Lift
Within ‘Safety Zone’ Deputy
Director for Operations Sally Benson and her staff
recently reviewed an accident resulting from a
very high reaching motion. Of concern was that
several employees were aware of an equipment problem
but did not report the difficulty. The problem
also had not been recognized on regular shop safety
walk-throughs. Lessons learned include:
- Report
equipment problems that lead to unsafe conditions,
such as malfunctions that cause unusual exertion
or over-reaching.
- Try
to keep lifting within the “safety zone”:
between knees and shoulder levels.
- When
you need to reach outside the “safety
zone”, consider using a ladder for high
reaches or stooping for low reaches. Commonly
used tools and supplies should be kept within
easy reach.

An
in-depth Q&A with Ron Gronsky — who, in
the past, has held a number
of leadership positions at Lab — is featured
in this week’s edition of the Berkeleyan (the
campus’s faculty and staff newspaper). In
it, he discusses his new role as chair the UC Berkeley’s
Academic Senate, ponders the dwindling state budget,
and outlines prospects for the future. Full
story.

Holiday
Shutdown
Plans Due on Friday
Researchers
who need special monitoring of experiments over
the holiday break must submit a Special Needs
memo by Friday. In addition, those who need to
give Facilities special contact instructions in
the event of a utility interruption must complete
a Utility Interruption Notification. These forms
and other information are available on the Facilities
website. Utility services to about 70 Berkeley
Lab buildings will be curtailed, Tuesday Dec.
23 at 6 p.m. through Jan. 1. Contact Desiree
Elvira or John
Hutchings for additional information.
Thanks
to Employees
Who Gave to SHARES
Berkeley
Lab wishes to thank the 47 employees who donated
$21,996 during the 2003 SHARES charitable giving
campaign. This was the first year that the campaign
was run utilizing an electronic donation form,
and suggestions on use of the form will be incorporated
into next year's campaign. Comments and questions
can be sent to [email protected]
