Congressional
Budget
Staffers Visit Lab
Staff
members of the Congressional Budget Committees came
to the Lab on Wednesday to learn more about the
work that is done here. During their visit, Ed Puccerella
(U.S. House of Representatives), and David Pappone,
(U.S. Senate) stopped by the National Energy Research
Scientific Computing Center (NERSC), Earth Sciences
Division, Advanced Light Source, Nanoscience and
Molecular Foundry, and Environmental Energy Technologies,
as well as the Joint Genome Institute in Walnut
Creek. Don Medley, manager of Community and
Government Relations, said Puccerella and Pappone
were impressed by the Lab's interdisciplinary approach
to a broad range of research projects. These Budget
Committee staffers played a key role in including
language in the FY 2004 Congressional Budget Resolution
that encouraged more funds for DOE’s Office
of Science. |

a switching procedure on the 12kV electrical system.
Although no power interruption is expected, the possibility
of an electrical power interruption always exists. As

Praise,
Support Expressed for DOE's Office of Science
DOE's
Office of Science recently received a publicity
boost. Calling the office “arguably the
brightest star in the Department of Energy,”
Senator Lamar Alexander (R-TN) chaired a hearing
of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Subcommittee
on Energy that highlighted the past achievements
and future promise of research funded by the office,
while noting that it has been overlooked in congressional
efforts to increase the federal investment in
science. Full
