Lab Study on Twins
Featured on ‘20/20’

What determines body weight? Is it just some people’s destiny to be thin, while others are fat? That’s what ABC-TV reporter John Stossel sought to answer on last Friday’s news program 20/20. Using a study conducted by Berkeley Lab on twins by life scientist Paul Williams, he discovered that fat is not hereditary, unlike other traits. Williams’ segment can be seen here (Realplayer software required). A written summary of the report can be accessed here.

Lab Family Care Policy
Adds Domestic Partners

Effective immediately, the Laboratory has modified its personnel policy by revising RPM §2.13 (B) and (D), Family Care and Medical Leave (FMLA). Same or opposite sex domestic partners have been added to the list of individuals requiring care for whom an employee may request FMLA. This change conforms Laboratory FMLA policy to UC Staff policy. These changes affect non-represented employees only. Represented employees should review their union agreements or contact their union representatives for information regarding their situation. Full text of the policy can be found here. See also Use of Sick Leave for Illness in Employee's Family for related policy change.

A joint project of the ALS, the Center for X-ray Optics (CXRO), and the University of Oregon, the beamline will produce microwatts of tunable coherent soft x-rays to do a wide range of experiments in both scattering and optics. Lab Director Charles Shank, ALS Division Director Daniel Chemla, and ALS Scientific Support Leader Zahir Hussain are scheduled to dedicate the beamline.
