Science Codes Blaze on NERSC Computer

After only six weeks running in production mode, the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center's 10 teraflop/s IBM SP supercomputer has scientific applications running at up to 68 percent of the system's theoretical peak speed, compared with the 5-10 percent that is typical. The computer, named "Seaborg," is the most powerful unclassified computer in the U.S. with the largest aggregate memory. Some of the recent calculations could not have been done on any other unclassified American computer. Full story.

Congressional Efforts
Back Science Funding

There has been activity on both sides of Congress to increase funding for the Department of Energy's Office of Science. The House Science Committee quickly passed an authorization bill that provides for annual budget increases between 9.7 and 15 percent in the next four years. The Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee is working on its own bill that will go to the floor in May. In addition, 39 senators signed a letter to the Senate leadership recommending a 10 percent increase in the Office of Science budget for next year. Electrical Loads Switch
To Grizzly Thursday

The Facilities Division Electrical Department will be switching all Lab loads to the upgraded Grizzly substation on Thursday. The procedures will be transparent to the Laboratory community and it is highly unlikely that an interruption of power will occur. However, the possibility of an electrical power interruption always exists. Take all necessary precautions. A hill-wide Public Address Announcement will be made prior to switching. GAO Auditors Here Beginning April 28

The General Accounting Office has announced that it will send an audit team to Berkeley Lab in late April to “determine the effectiveness of internal controls over procurement methods and property management systems.” The GAO visit will be the third in a series of audits of Lab procurement and property areas. The GAO audit follows an Office of Science audit in January and an Inspector General’s (DOE) audit in February. A sampling of transactions will be tracked to test the effectiveness of the controls. ‘Hulk’ Crew’s Return
Will Impact Parking

A film crew from the forthcoming Universal movie “The Hulk” will be returning to Berkeley Lab tonight to prepare for a brief scene shoot on Tuesday afternoon on the Advanced Light Source patio. To accommodate their vehicles, parking spaces outside the ALS, next to Building 53 and along McMillan Road will be blocked off, after 6 tonight and all day tomorrow. ALS pedestrian access will not be affected, though the film set will be restricted. The movie, parts of which were filmed here last April, is scheduled for release June 20.
