ALS ‘Core’ Experiments
On Discovery Channel

University of California, Berkeley geophysicist Raymond Jeanloz and Advanced Light Source physicist Simon Clark have been using an ALS beamline to help re-create the heat and pressures found deep inside the earth. Discovery Channel reported on their efforts to “dig” into the earth’s core as the nation turned out to see the fictionalized version in the movie “Core.” Jeanloz and Clark are seeking to understand what the earth was like just after it formed. The 9-minute Discovery video can be viewed here. (Requires Window Media Player Plug-in to view).

LA Times Editorial: SNAP Is ‘Best Bet’

Calling Berkeley Lab’s proposed SNAP satellite project the “best bet” for figuring out the impact of dark energy on the fate of the universe, the Los Angeles Times wrote in an editorial this week that cosmology has a bright future if Congress funds future cosmic research. Read it here.

Sec. Abraham Says Gas
Prices May Have Peaked

Verne Kopytoff, Chronicle Staff Writer

Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham pointed Monday to a modest dip in gasoline prices during the past two weeks as a sign that record high fuel costs may be ebbing. In interview in San Jose, Abraham called the drop good news. But he declined to say whether illegal market manipulation caused prices to jump in the first place, as some consumer groups have said. El Reyes, 59, Was Audit Group Leader

Elpidio M. Reyes passed away on Monday due to complications from a 9-month battle with cancer. He was 59. Audit Group Leader in the Internal Audit Services Department, Reyes came to Berkeley Lab from Livermore Lab in 1992. Internal Audit Manager Terry Hamilton praised Reyes’ “integrity, objectivity and caring manner. He will be sorely missed.” He leaves his wife, Evelyn; two daughters, Denise and Diane; son David, a sophomore at UC San Diego; and son-in-law Daniel. Funeral services are pending. Read more about Reyes in Friday’s issue of Currents.

Warning About Signs
At ALS Access Road

Construction activities at the N1 access road along the south side of the ALS will continue for another six weeks. The normally one-way road will be used as a two-way road at times, while the upper portion is closed entirely. Signs are posted, and the roadway may be marked with cones. Unauthorized removal of the signs will cause confusion and created hazards to personnel.
