tablSpecial Event:  ESD Hosts Talk on Biosphere-Atmosphere Interactions

As part of its Distinguished Scientists Seminar series, the Lab’s Earth Sciences Division is hosting a talk by Dennis Baldocchi, a UC Berkeley professor of biometeorology. He will discuss “Using Biophysical Models and Eddy Covariance Measurements to Ask (and Answer) Questions About Biosphere-Atmosphere Interactions” on Friday, 1 to 2:30 p.m. in Building 90-3075. Baldocchi’s current research includes flux measurements and modeling studies (CO2, H2O) over an oak savanna and grassland and over a peatland pasture (CH4, CO2, H2O).

tablIn The News: EETD’s Gunshinan Blogs on Energy Efficiency for QUEST

Jim Gunshinan, with Berkeley Lab’s Environmental Energy Technologies Division, is the managing editor of Home Energy Magazine and is also blogging on energy efficiency for KQED’s QUEST, a multimedia series that features Northern California science news. In his latest posting, he touts the benefits of LED lighting, which he hopes will replace compact fluorescent lamps (CFL) as the next boon to energy efficiency. Go here to read his blog.

Special Event: CITRIS Campus Lecture Series Includes Lab Researchers

tablThe Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society (CITRIS) has announced the line-up of speakers for its fall seminar series. Among the guests are Dan Fletcher, with Berkeley Lab’s Physical Biosciences Division (Oct. 22), and Cecilia Aragon, with the Computational Research Division (Nov. 19). tablSafety Note: Revised Chemical Hygiene/Safety Training Now Online

The classroom version of Chemical Hygiene and Safety Training (EHS0348) is now an online course and has been completely revised. This course is required for personnel who handle or may be exposed to the chemicals in lab settings as identified through the Job Hazards Analysis (JHA). Go here to access the course (EHS0348). All work with chemicals must be in accordance with the controls listed in the Chemical Hygiene and Safety Plan. For more information, contact Larry McLouth (X5286) or Brooke Vaughn (X7603).
