Employees can help create a safer place to work by filling out an online survey on the Lab's safety culture. The survey includes questions on ergonomic issues and the effectiveness of EH&S communications. The survey has 44 questions and takes about 10 minutes to complete. With more than 150 job openings to fill, the Lab will hold a job fair on Saturday, Nov. 8, in the cafeteria, from noon to 4 p.m. The fair will focus on recruiting for both the Facilities and Environment, Health, and Safety Divisions. Job-seekers will be able to hold on-site interviews with hiring managers and other staff. The Lab will provide free parking and free limited shuttle service from the Downtown Berkeley BART station. The Berkeley Lab Learning Institute (BLI) is offering two sessions of its course on “Roles and Accountabilities for New Supervisors.” The first will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 12, with the second on Tuesday, Nov. 18. Both sessions will be held in Perseverance Hall from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Supervisors who were hired or transferred into a supervisor position within the past six months are encouraged to attend, however all supervisors are welcome. Register for this free class here. In a joint effort with UC Berkeley’s CARE Services, the Lab's Benefits Department will be sponsoring three workshops on relieving stress. The workshops will explore core aspects of stress, ways to advantageously use stress, preventative measures, and skills to actively manage the experience of stress. The sessions will take place Monday, Nov. 3, from 10 to 11 a.m. in Perseverance Hall, Wednesday, Nov. 19, from 2 to 3 p.m. in the Building 66 Auditorium, and Monday, Dec. 15, from 2 to 3 p.m. in Perseverance Hall.
Ana Tully, senior administrator for the Technical Services Group in EH&S, died on Oct. 17 following a battle with lung cancer. She was 62. Tully started her career at the Lab in 1994 and retired in 2007. A memorial service will be held this Saturday at 5 p.m. at 1757 Brandon Street in Oakland.
The Lab’s Asian Association has invited financial economist and certified financial planner Jim Moultrup to give an investment seminar tomorrow from 4 to 5 p.m. in Perseverance Hall. Moultrup will talk about designing, protecting and growing retirement funds in turbulent times. All employees are welcome.
The annual Berkeley Lab craft fair will he held Thursday, Dec. 6, from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the cafeteria. Sponsored by the Employee Activities Association, past fairs have featured a variety of handmade goods for sale, such as jewelry, photography, art glass, candles, baked goods, jams, tamales, sewn, knitted and crocheted items, music, paintings, poems, and pottery. Those interested in having a booth at the Craft Fair should contact Robin Mitchell.
Lab staff can purchase discount tickets for a concert by the Young People’s Symphony Orchestra, which has featured performers who were interns at the Lab. The concert takes place this Saturday at 8 p.m. in the First Congregational Church of Berkeley and features pianist Chloe Pang, performing Berlioz, Gershwin and Beethoven.
