Women in Science Council

On July 28, 2008, the Women in Science Council hosted a Brown Bag Lunch Seminar which featured Prof. Inez Fung as our first guest speaker who discussed “The Physics of the Climate System”.  This event attracted 45 scientific, engineering, and operational staff.  On August 12 and 13, 2008, the Women in Science Council sponsored a “Negotiation and Problem Solving Workshop” which offered three individual sessions (one for Scientists, another for Post Docs and GSRAs, and a third for Operational Staff).  The ½ day long workshops attracted 18 Scientists, 24 Post Docs and GSRAs, and 28 Operational Staff.

The next Scientific Brown Bag Lunch Seminar is scheduled for Thursday, October 30, 2008 in Perseverance Hall (54-130) from 12pm – 1:30pm and will feature Dr. Cecilia Aragon, Staff Scientist for the Computational Research Division.  Dr. Aragon will discuss “Facilitating Scientific Insight with Sunfall”, a collaborative visual analytics system developed for the Nearby Supernova Factory, an international astrophysics experiment and the largest data volume supernova search currently in operation.

Please be sure to mark your calendars for this upcoming event!  For questions, please contact Kamala Green 510-486-7635.

We are also looking to expand our council and request representation from each scientific division to serve as a strategic partner on this initiative.  Current members include: Nancy Brown – EETD Sr. Staff Scientist, Natalie Roe – Physics Sr. Staff Scientist, Cecilia Aragon – CRD Staff Scientist, Vera Potapenko – Chief Human Resources Officer and Kamala Green – Sr. EEO Manager.. If you are interested in joining this dynamic group, please contact Kamala Green at ext. 7635.
