Secret Revealed


Advanced Light Source scientists Andreas Scholl and Nobumichi Tamura were part of a team that used beams from the PEEM-3 and x-ray diffraction microscopes to reveal new secrets behind the mysterious formation of mother of pearl, or nacre, the inner lining of the shells of abalone and certain other mollusks. The team found a surprising misorientation in nacre’s biomineral structure that could play a role in the shell’s remarkable strength. More>

Paul Momoh, a postdoc in the Chemical Sciences Division under John Gibson, runs a wesbite called EthanolPlug that is dedicated to all things biofuel and features what may be the most comprehensive and up-to-date biofuel events calendar. The site and calendar provide a "one-of-a-kind" resource for scientists and postdocs looking to present and generate interest in their research results. More>

bldg 50Construction: Meetings on Seismic Upgrade Projects for Buildings 50 (Dec. 4) and 74 (Dec. 5)

Two town-hall meetings will be held to discuss the seismic upgrade projects in Building 50 and Building 74. Topics will include occupant move plans, parking, effect on neighbors, and construction activities. The Building 50 meeting takes place on Thursday, Dec. 4 in the Building 50 Auditorium, while the Building 74 meeting will take place on Friday, Dec. 5, in the Building 66 Auditorium. Thanksgiving Schedules: Bus Departures; Coffee Shop Hours

Due to the Thanksgiving holiday, the coffee bar will close at 3 p.m. today, and the Lab’s shuttle bus services will alter final departure times:

Building 65: 6 p.m. for the Blue Route; 5:45 p.m. for Rockridge Route
Building 62/66: 5:52 p.m. for the Orange
Potter St: 5:25 p.m.
JBEI: 5:35 p.m.
