Training Needed to Ship Dry Ice Packages



Dry ice is considered a hazardous material when transported by air. A recent incident occurred in which a shipment that contained dry ice was improperly packaged and rejected by FedEx. At Berkeley Lab, all hazardous-material shipments must be conducted by the Facilities Division Shipping Department, trained EH&S Division employees, or other specifically trained and qualified staff. A low-tech medical-diagnostic technique, first conceived over coffee at UC Berkeley, has put a pair of young scientists in the running for top awards at the 2008 Collegiate Inventors Competition. Khalid Salaita, with Berkeley Lab’s Physical Biosciences Division, and Nathan Clack, a 2007 Berkeley PhD graduate, are among 11 finalists in the national contest. More>

rossoSpecial Event: Earth Sciences Distinguished Seminar This Friday

As part of its Distinguished Scientist Seminar Series, the Earth Sciences Division is sponsoring a lecture by Kevin Rosso of the Pacific Northwest National Lab this Friday from 10:30 a.m. to noon in the Building 50 Auditorium. He will discuss “Electron Transfer Dynamics in the Biogeochemical Cycle of Iron.” Rosso’s research is centered on the relationships between the atomic and electronic structure of crystalline materials using various concepts and tools of surface science, chemistry, solid-state physics, and crystal chemistry.

Policy: Veterans’ Day Holiday Option

Eligible employees have the option of using Veterans’ Day, Tuesday, Nov. 11, as a paid holiday (if Cesar Chavez Day has not already been taken as one), with approval from their supervisor. Those who have taken Cesar Chavez Day as a holiday or who will take Veterans’ Day as a holiday must use a vacation day or leave of absence without pay on Friday, Dec. 26. See the "Limited Floating Holiday Implementation Guidance" for information on eligibility and time-entry procedures. Special Event: Web Security Course on Campus Thursday

Gabe Lawrence, IT Security Director for UC San Diego, will be on the UC Berkeley campus Thursday to offer a course on web application security.  Vulnerabilities in custom scientific applications are a growing threat to Berkeley Lab.  Learn how to protect data through examples of attacks and vulnerabilities caused by insecure coding practices. The course is open to all Lab employees and guests. No RSVP is required. More>

Mail Services: Bldg. 50 Auditorium FedEx Drop Box Removed

FedEx has removed the drop-box outside the Building 50 Auditorium due to lack of use. FedEx pickup service outside of Building 50B-4206 (provided by the Mail Room) is unchanged. No other FedEx services at Berkeley Lab are affected.  Contact Bill Llewellyn for more information (x7726).

Policy: Licensing Income Distribution
