Miquel Salmeron Chosen as Materials Sciences Division Director
Miquel Salmeron has been named the Director of the Materials Sciences Division, replacing acting Director Paul Alivisatos.
Salmeron — who joined the Lab in 1984 — is a pioneer in the development of scanning probe technologies for the characterization of surfaces and interfaces. He is renowned for his studies of friction and adhesion at the molecular level as well as for his investigation of molecular motion on surfaces.
Salmeron has played a key role at the Molecular Foundry since its inception and is the Scientific Director of the Imaging and Characterization Facility.
“I believe Salmeron has the right instincts and qualities that will allow him to excel as a successful Division Director here at Berkeley Lab,” said Lab Director Steve Chu of Salmeron’s appointment.
“I would like to thank Paul Alivisatos for his continued service to Berkeley Lab,” Chu added. “Under his leadership the Materials Sciences Division has built up a remarkable record of accomplishment and put in place a team that is well positioned for the future. We have every reason to believe that Salmeron will build on this success and take MSD to new heights.”
