tablIn The News:  Lab Life Scientist’s Nature Paper on Postponing Aging

Research on lab organisms such as yeast, worms and mice has encouraged the notion that lifespan can be manipulated genetically. The big question is whether this work translates to the human condition. In a Nature review, Jan Vijg and Berkeley Lab life scientist Judith Campisi discuss current knowledge about factors that limit human lifespan. They conclude that it is too early to say whether it is feasible to postpone human aging and natural death for many decades. More>


tablUC Staff Council: Lab Employee Sought to Serve as Junior Delegate

The Council of UC Staff Assemblies (CUCSA) is comprised of delegates from every UC-managed institution, including Berkeley Lab. The Lab is seeking a junior delegate to serve alongside newly appointed senior delegate Stefano De Santis (right), for 2008-09. Members meet quarterly at a different UC campus to discuss issues that affect staff with top UC administrators and participate on teams that develop recommendations for UCOP and the Regents. The Berkeley Lab Learning Institute is hosting another session of the two-day course “Fundamentals of Leading and Motivating People” on Oct. 20 and 21.  The course is designed to help supervisors and work leads achieve project goals, manage time, and create an innovative, diverse, and productive work environment. Health Note: Next Onsite Weight Watchers Series Begins; Info Meeting Today

Employees interested in shedding some extra pounds can attend an informational meeting on the Lab's Weight Watchers program today from noon to 1 p.m. in Building 26. The next session officially starts Wednesday, Sept. 10 (same time and location). The cost is $186, which can be divided into three separate payments. '08 Fiscal Close: Website Provides Information on Deadlines and Guidelines

September marks the start of the fiscal year-end close process for Berkeley Lab. As an integrated contractor to the Department of Energy, the Lab must close its books and report FY 2008 financial results to DOE in a tightly coordinated schedule. In addition to providing general information for the entire Lab community, there are specific activities and deadlines that directly affect finance and business management staff. As reported in last Wednesday’s edition of Today at Berkeley Lab, EHS 10: Introduction to EH&S at Berkeley Lab is no longer a classroom course, however the incorrect link was provided.
