People: Spadafora is New Kind of Director’s Chief of Staff

Tony Spadafora started his professional life as a high-energy physicist, made a transition to astrophysics, and along the way discovered a gift for managing complex scientific projects. When he assumes his duties as Director Steve Chu's Chief of Staff on July 1, Spadafora will be the first Berkeley Lab Chief of Staff with hands-on scientific experience. More> 

TABL-negotiationsEmployee Development: Free Negotiation Workshops in August

Free workshops on negotiating, problem solving and conflict resolution will be offered in August, tailored for specific audiences. Operations staff can attend on Tuesday, Aug. 12 (8:45 to noon). On Wednesday, Aug. 13, workshops for staff and career scientists (8:45 to noon) and postdocs and graduate students (1 to 4 p.m.) will take place. All workshops take place in Perseverance Hall. Safety Note: Could Broken Wrist Injury Have Been Prevented?

Recently a diner at the cafeteria tripped and broke his wrist — an accident that was completely avoidable. He fell over a bolt that was exposed after someone moved a picnic table on the patio. Staff and Lab guests are asked to think about the effects of their actions on safety, and to report any hazards they may come upon as soon as possible, either to their manager, Division Safety Coordinator, or Environment, Health and Safety. Working together, everyone can help make the Lab a safer environment.

Benefits News: Financial-Investment Workshops on July 9 and 15

A financial advisor with Morgan Stanley will visit the Lab on Wednesday, July 9, to lead a workshop on “Investment Strategies for Women” at 2 p.m. in Building 2-100B. On Tuesday, July 15, staff can attend a class on “Organizing Your Financial Life” at 10 a.m. in the same location. Registration is required for both workshops.

Safety Note: Hands-Free Cell Phone Law in Effect Starting on Tuesday

Employees are reminded that Tuesday is the first day of the new law that prohibits California drivers from using a handheld cell phone while driving. The speaker-phone function can be used, or an earpiece or Bluetooth device. More>

Special Event: Asian Food Festival on Sunday, Noon to 4 p.m.

Berkeley Lab’s Asian Association is hosting a food festival in Albany’s Memorial Park on Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. All Lab staff are invited to attend. Helpers are needed to set up and clean up. Send e-mail here to RSVP.
