Artist-in-Residence in Alivisatos Lab Creates Nano Colors

Nano Colors

[KQED Quest] Artist Kate Nichols longed to paint with the iridescent colors of the Morpho butterfly, but no such pigments existed. So she became the first artist-in-residence at Berkeley Lab to synthesize nanoparticles and incorporate them into her artwork. Nichols says the idea for creating colors that are not possible to create with paint came by listening to stories about nanotechnology on NPR. She learned that the butterfly wings' brilliant blue color arose through “structural color,” and that nanotechnology could help her obtain this vibrant palette. So she wrote an email to Lab director Paul Alivisatos. More>
