Welcome-Back Event Held for Art Rosenfeld

Paul Alivisatos and Art Rosenfeld

Lab Director Paul Alivisatos has named Art Rosenfeld (right) a Distinguished Scientist Emeritus, placing him in rare company. At a recent reception in the cafeteria, Alivisatos presented Rosenfeld with a framed certificate and noted that global climate change is the biggest problem the world faces, and that energy efficiency is key to addressing the problem. Rosenfeld, a scientist at the Lab and a UCB faculty member from 1954 until his retirement in 1994, switched to energy efficiency around 1974 following a distinguished career in the Physics Division. He served 10 years as a Commissioner on the California Energy Commission and recently returned to the Lab to work on cool roofs. Go here to download a PDF of Rosenfeld’s autobiography, “The Art of Energy Efficiency.”

Research: Path to Protein Crystallization Revealed

ProteinResearchers at Berkeley Lab’s Molecular Foundy, including James DeYoreo, Carolyn Bertozzi, Sungwook Chung, Seong-Ho Shin, and Steve Whitelam used atomic force microscopy to image in real-time how surface layer (S-layer) proteins form crystals in a cell-like environment. This direct observation of S-layer proteins, which serve as the first point of contact between bacteria and their environment, could provide researchers with insight into how microorganisms stave off antibiotics or lock carbon dioxide into minerals.
