Electronically, the insides of a three-dimensional topological insulator resemble any ordinary insulating material. The surface is different: here, electronic states with no band gaps may allow superconductivity, magnetism, and other phenomena of interest for spintronics, quantum computation, and fundamental physics. In Nature Physics online, a team led by Zahid Hasan of Princeton University has just announced clues to the existence of one odd beast that researchers have predicted —quasiparticles that are their own antiparticles — found lurking in the surface superconductivity of copper-doped bismuth selenium. The Molecular Foundry and National Center for Electron Microscopy will hold their joint User Meeting starting Thursday, Sept. 30. This year's meeting theme is Nanoscience for Energy Technology, featuring talks from solar energy luminary Michael Gratzel and the Department of Energy’s Linda Horton, along with the popular NanoFest science film festival. In addition, workshops will be held on Oct. 1 in seven areas reflecting the theme. The deadline for online registration is tomorrow; very limited late registrants will be accepted after this date. Open House: General Volunteers, Tour Guides Needed for Saturday, Oct. 2 Event Improving relations with the community is one of Director Paul Alivisatos’s five strategic initiatives for the Lab, and the Open House planned for Oct. 2 will serve as one of the key tools to educate our neighbors on who we are and what we do. To make the event a success, volunteers are needed in several areas throughout the day. Go here to register. Tour guides for the Lab bus tours are also needed. [Popular Science] Using a Nokia N8 smartphone and a CellScope, the team behind the Wallace & Gromit series has made the world’s smallest stop-motion animation film. The film’s directors said Nokia commissioned them to make the film in celebration of CellScope’s potential to improve medicine in the developing world. CellScope is the brainchild of Berkeley Lab physical bioscientist Daniel Fletcher, who combined a cellphone camera with a 50x magnification microscope. More>
Property Management: Use of Laptops Offsite Requires Authorization Employees taking Lab-issued Laptops for use offsite are reminded that divisional authorization is required. Contact your Division Property Representative for assistance in obtaining a Property Pass. A wallet-size card displaying the laptop's barcode number, manufacturer, model and serial numbers will be issued. This can be used for reference in filling out a police report if the laptop is stolen. Guidance from Property Management on how to protect your laptop, including how to report a loss, can be found here.
