Berkeley Lab's Alexandre Chorin (left) and James Sethian won prestigious
prizes from the International Council for Industrial and Applied
Mathematics (ICIAM) for groundbreaking work in applied math, with
impacts ranging from fluid mechanics and aerodynamics to medical
imaging and semiconductor manufacturing. Chorin won the 2011 Lagrange Prize and Sethian won the 2011 Pioneer Prize. The awards, announced today by the ICIAM, bring to Berkeley Lab two of the five math prizes the organization awards every four years. Berkeley Lab's Science at the Theater fall series kicks off today at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre with a talk by three Lab scientists on energy efficient stoves for the developing world and how families are using these to pioneer carbon trading. The event, which starts at 7 p.m., features the Environmental Energy Technologies Division's Ashok Gadgil (pictured), Adam Rausch, and Kayje Booker. The University of California Board of Regents last Thursday voted unanimously to increase the amount UC and its employees contribute to the pension plan, to help put it on more solid financial footing. Beginning in July 2011, employee members of the UC Retirement Plan will begin contributing 3.5 percent of salary into the plan; UC will contribute seven percent. The amount will increase again in July 2012, with employees paying five percent and UC paying 10 percent. More>
A Department of Energy Berkeley Site Office poster session on the draft Environmental Assessment for the Computational Research and Theory Facility Project will be held today from 4 to 6 p.m. at the South Berkeley Senior Center (2939 Ellis St.). Lab staff and community members are invited to attend.
The draft Environmental Assessment examines the environmental impacts of DOE’s “Proposed Action.” The purpose of the Proposed Action is to consolidate all DOE Advanced Scientific Computing Research-funded Berkeley Lab programs with related Lab/University of California computational science programs. These programs would be relocated in a facility on or near the Lab site. More>
To help ease parking congestion at the Lab, starting today a vendor will provide assisted parking in the D lot (the Pit), on a trial basis. When all the stalls in the lot are full, an attendant will direct staff to stack-park their cars. After a walk-around inspection and login of contact information, staff will give the attendant their keys and receive a claim ticket, which they will use to retrieve their keys upon departure. The attendant will be onsite until 6 p.m. Employees working later must pick up their keys by 6 p.m. More>
The Lab’s HR Benefits group is hosting a free workshop on “Managing Stress in Times of Change” today at 11:30 a.m. in Perseverance Hall (Bldg. 54). This workshop will discuss reactions and stress associated with change, identify common processes for change and transition, and explore common pitfalls to avoid. Registration is recommended, but drop-ins are welcome. Also, a CARE Services counselor will at the Lab on Sept. 28 for free, individual sessions from 1 to 4 p.m. Call x7754 to make an appointment.
Employee Activity: Runners Sought for Lab Racing Club Stephen Derenzo, the longtime organizer of the Lab’s Runaround fun race, is seeking runners interested in forming a Berkeley Lab Corporate Racing Club. There are several corporate challenges each year, such as the JP Morgan Chase Corporate Challenge (August) and the San Francisco Half Marathon Corporate Challenge (July). Lab employees can run as a team against other institutions and corporations. The camaraderie and support of colleagues can be a big boost to motivation, training, performance, and joy in running, says Derenzo. Send e-mail here if interested.
