Researchers from Princeton University and the Berkeley Lab have found a way to make computer simulations of supernovae exploding in three dimensions. Increased funding for science programs at Berkeley Lab in recent years has meant more jobs and more research projects. But it has also meant less space. With office and laboratory space becoming increasingly tight and some 20 percent of its staff and facilities already off-site in leased facilities (such as the Joint Genome Institute, pictured), Berkeley Lab has decided to look off-site for a long-term solution to its space crunch. As mentioned in Director Paul Alivisatos' recent all-hands meeting, employees interested in sharing fascinating science activities with local students are invited to participate in an upcoming workshop, "Sifting Through Science." In this workshop employees will learn how to guide kindergarteners to explore buoyancy, magnetism, and the use of tools as they investigate the physical properties of objects. The workshop is part of the Lab's Center for Science and Engineering Education Berkeley Lab in School Settings (BLISS) program. It takes place on Monday, Sept 20, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Building 7-211. Registration is required and lunch will be provided.
The Lab’s Health Services group will be offering low-cost flu and pneumonia vaccines in October and November. They will take place on Oct. 6 and 13, from 8 to 11:45 p.m., in Building 26. The next clinic takes place at the Joint Genome Institute on Oct. 21, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Building 310-350. Other clinics take place at NERSC (room 254) on Oct. 27, Potter Street (977-248) on Nov. 5, and JBEI (room 4134) on Nov. 11, all from 9 a.m. to noon. Cost is $10 per shot for flu and $45 for pneumonia. Call x6266 for an appointment.
Employees are invited to participate in an online town hall meeting to ask University of California leaders questions about the recent proposed changes to the UC retirement plan. This live, interactive meeting will take place on Friday, Sept. 24, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Berkeley Lab staff and retirees can watch the proceedings on their computer or gather in the Building 50 Auditorium to watch the live webcast. Detailed information on the proposed changes can be found on "The Future of UC Retirement Benefits” website.
A short section of Lawrence Road adjacent to the J Parking Lot will be closed tomorrow for repair. Drivers can access the eastern end of the Lab using McMillan Road. Detour signs will be posted. Also, the main entrance to the cafeteria parking lot will be closed for pavement repair. All work will be completed by the end of the day.
