Some of the most sensitive devices for detecting magnetic fields are alkali-vapor magnetometers that use light both to put a spin on atoms and then to measure that spin. Now a team from Berkeley Lab, UC Berkeley, and the Vavilov State Optical Institute in Russia, led by Dmitry Budker of the Nuclear Science Division, has achieved a remarkable technical advance with this kind of magnetometer, an advance with potential for improving atomic clocks, quantum memory devices, and a range of other scientific gadgets that depend on measuring spinning atoms with light. To help ease parking congestion at the Lab, a vendor will provide assisted parking in the D lot (the Pit), on a trial basis. The program will begin on Monday, Sept. 20. When all the stalls in the lot are full, an attendant will direct staff to stack park their cars. After a walk-around inspection and login of contact information, staff will give the attendant their keys and receive a claim ticket, which they will use to retrieve their keys upon departure. The attendant will be onsite until 6 p.m. Employees working later must pick up their keys by 6 p.m. More>
A message from Deputy Director Horst Simon and Chief Financial Officer Jeffrey Fernandez
Berkeley Lab is experiencing unprecedented growth, ever-increasing institutional requirements, and substantial increases to pension plan contributions. It’s imperative we become more efficient and increase resources for scientific activities or we will find ourselves at a competitive disadvantage with other labs and universities. To mitigate this looming problem, we have begun focused efforts to increase efficiency and reduce bureaucracy to maintain our competitive edge. We recently launched an efficiency campaign across the Lab that has included reviews of all of the Operational Divisions and will include an operational review of the scientific divisions in the fall. Several good ideas have been developed from the reviews and are being enthusiastically pursued. Often the best ideas come from employees who are closest to the work. We want to hear your thoughts and ideas for operational efficiencies. All ideas will be considered, and those with the most merit will be integrated into future strategies and plans.
With the upcoming completion of several construction projects, 77 parking spots will become available. The Y parking lot west of Building 80 will reopen on Wednesday, Sept. 22, restoring 25 spaces. The first of three parking areas on Lawrence Road has opened, providing seven spaces. The second, 15-space lot will open in mid-October, and the third area, providing seven additional spaces, is scheduled to open in early November. Also, an additional 23 parking spots have recently been made available below Building 31.
A DOE Berkeley Site Office poster session on the draft Environmental Assessment for the Computational Research and Theory Facility Project will be held Monday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the South Berkeley Senior Center (2939 Ellis St.). Lab staff and community members are invited to attend. The assessment examines the environmental impacts of DOE’s “Proposed Action.” The purpose of the Proposed Action is to consolidate all DOE Advanced Scientific Computing Research-funded Berkeley Lab programs with related Berkeley Lab/University of California computational science programs. These programs would be relocated in a facility on or near the Berkeley Lab site. More>
