The Lab is hosting a community Open House on Saturday, Oct. 2, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Employees planning to attend the event must register and select from a morning or afternoon session. Visit the Open House website for more details. Employees and users working that day do not need to register; however, parking and roadways near the event area will be restricted. Blackberry Gate personnel will provide staff with a list of open parking lots when entering the Lab that day.
The University of California has announced a funding opportunity to help move inventions toward commercialization. Technologies likely to attract industry interest, pending further development, are eligible to apply. Matching industry funds are not required. Interested PIs should submit a Letter of Intent (LOI) before Oct. 26. UC Discovery will review the LOIs to assess interest in the grant program and determine implementation steps. At this point, there is no upper dollar limit per invention. Researchers are encouraged to share their LOIs with the Lab’s Technology Transfer and Intellectual Property Department. Tech Transfer staff is available to walk PIs through invention disclosures, which are required before submitting an LOI, and to discuss technology maturation in general. More>
For those of you who are fans of symmetry’s “Explain It In 60 Seconds," Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory has its own version, the Video Glossary. Berkeley scientists and engineers from a wide variety of disciplines give quick definitions of scientific terms, running the gamut from Standard Model to extremophile. Most entries are about one minute long, which is quite impressive when you realize that some of the presenters are being asked to explain concepts that nobody really understands, like dark energy, or that everybody only thinks they understand, like gravity. [Bloomberg] In the 2008-2009 school year, women received just over half of all doctorates, up from 49 percent in 2007-2008 and 44 percent in 2000, according to a report released today by the Washington-based Council of Graduate Schools, which represents more than 500 universities. The report doesn’t include professional degrees in law, business and medicine. More>
The Red Wing work shoe vendor will be at the Lab tomorrow from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Lawrence Road near Strawberry Gate. Employees may be required to wear safety shoes to protect from potential hazards. Those working in areas where there is a danger of foot injuries due to falling or rolling objects, or objects piercing the sole, may be authorized to purchase safety shoes. More>
Today through Friday, a drilling rig and support vehicle will be in place along the east-bound lane of Lawrence Road adjacent to the roadway leading to Building 31. Due to the size of the equipment and location of the well, the east-bound lane will be blocked to traffic. Flaggers will be in place to direct traffic during the drilling operation.
