PBD's Sauer Gets Award for Lifetime Achievement

Ken Sauer, a senior scientist in Berkeley Lab’s Physical Biosciences Division, was given a lifetime achievement award by the International Society of Photosynthesis Research (ISPR). Sauer received the award at the ISPR International Congress of Photosynthesis that took place in Beijing last month. The award is presented every three years to recognize exceptional career-long contributions to understanding the process of photosynthesis. Sauer is also a professor emeritus in UC Berkeley’s Chemistry Department.

VolunteersSpecial Event: Volunteers Sought for Runaround Fun Race

The Lab's 33rd Annual Runaround takes place Friday, Oct. 8, at noon. Ensuring the race is fun and safe for those who participate takes many hours of behind-the-scenes planning and lots of volunteers. The first "Call for Volunteers" meeting will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 14, in the cafe lower dining room from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Staff are needed to help with starting and finishing tables, course setup, timekeeping, result tabulation, decorations, T-shirt distribution and other tasks. sustainLBL: 'Great Race for Clean Air' Gift Card Winners

GravityLady Idos of Human Resources and Sandra Wittenbrock of the Computational Research Division are winners of a $25 gift card for participating in the “Great Race for Clean Air.” The event — a friendly competition among Bay Area employers to lessen the commuting impact on the environment — is sponsored by the Bay Area Management District and 511 Rideshare. Those who participate are eligible for weekly drawings to win gift cards. The contest continues through the month of the September. Go here to register.

VolunteersIT: Google App Classes in September

Hands-on training for Google applications will be held on Fridays during September in Building 90-26. Classes for Google Calendar take place on Sept. 17 at 1:30 p.m., Google Docs on Sept. 10 and Sept. 24 at 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., and Google Sites on Sept. 17 at 9:30 a.m. Go here to register under the Computer Applications category.

Health Services: Diabetes Testing; Weight Watchers Session

Health Services is offering free hemoglobin A1C tests — which can help determine the presence of diabetes — on Wednesday, Sept. 15, from 8 a.m. to noon. Also, a new Weight Watchers session will begin on Wednesday, Sept. 15, at noon in Building 26-124. Cost is $186 for 17 weeks. Call x6266 to register for the blood test and Weight Watchers session.
