Berkeley Lab will host its next Science at the Theater event Monday, Nov. 8, at 7 p.m. on “Putting Carbon in the Place: What You Can Do.” A panel of scientists will reveal the latest research on how to reduce your carbon footprint at home, work, even when you shop. Learn how small choices can have a big impact. The event — which takes place at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre — is free and open to the public. The University of California’s Open Enrollment period begins today and continues through Nov. 23 at 5 p.m. Significant changes are planned for 2011, including the addition of two new medical plans: Health Net Blue and Gold HMO and Anthem Lumenos PPO with HRA; the doubling or tripling of medical rates for some plans; coverage of children up to age 26 for plans that provide child coverage (offspring must be added during Open Enrollment); new enrollment in the ARAG Legal Plan; and enrolling or re-enrolling in health/dependent care flexible spending accounts. People: Membership in Petroleum Engineer Society for Earth Scientist The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) recently honored George Moridis with a Distinguished Membership at SPE’s Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition held last month in Italy. Moridis is a Deputy Program Lead for Energy Resources in the Lab’s Earth Sciences Division. Moridis was recognized for his significant contributions to research into analysis, design, and prediction of gas production from unconventional gas resources, including gas hydrates, and as as developer of the TOUGH+ software (a member of the TOUGH family of codes developed by a team led K. Pruess of ESD) for modeling fluid flow and transport in complex geologic media. More>
Cleantech Group, LLC has announced its 2010 Global Cleantech 100 — the 100 private companies most likely to make a significant commercial impact in clean tech in the next five to 10 years. On this year’s prestigious list is WaterHealth International, a company founded on a Berkeley Lab technology, developed by Ashok Gadgil, to purify water inexpensively using ultraviolet light. Since its 1996 founding, WaterHealth has installed over 300 water purification systems worldwide to provide more than one million people with decentralized access to clean, safe water.
The next speaker in the Molecular Foundry’s Distinguished Lecture series is Paul Weiss of UC Los Angeles, who will present a talk on “New Dimensions in Patterning: Placement and Metrology of Chemical Functionality at All Scales.” The lecture takes place tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. in the Building 66 Auditorium. “As we learn to measure the precise structures, environments, and functions of molecules at the molecular scale,” says Weiss of his talk, “we are learning to direct molecules into desired positions to create nanostructures, to connect functional molecules to the outside world, and to serve as test structures for measurements of single or bundled molecules.”
Public Affairs: Free Berkeley Lab Peel-Off Decals Available The Public Affairs office has created a Berkeley Lab decal for use in car and building windows. The decal adheres to glass, but can easily be removed and reapplied. Employees can pick up a free decal in Building 65 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. during the week. Limit two per person.
Staff from the International Researchers & Scholars Office (IRSO) will conduct a brown bag Q&A session today from noon to 1 p.m. in Perseverance Hall (54-130). Work to repair the walkway that leads down to the Building 65 complex, along the southern ridge above the Pit parking lot, is now complete and the path has re-opened.
