Most Lab IT services including Gmail, the lbl.gov website, and all services which utilize the Lab's LDAP username and password will be temporarily unavailable tonight, beginning at 6 p.m. and lasting for approximately one hour. When complete, the maintenance will increase the resiliency of key services in the event of a power outage. Incoming e-mail will be queued and delivered once service is restored. More>
Special Event: Show Your Halloween Spirit at Pumpking Carving Contest With Halloween just around the corner, the Guest House and Lab Café are sponsoring the Lab’s first-ever pumpkin-carving contest. Employees can pick up pumpkins from the cafeteria lobby on Monday, Oct. 25 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. (or contact the Guest House for delivery). Participants will have three days to design and carve their pumpkins (science motifs especially welcome), and must bring them back to the lobby on Thursday, Oct. 28, between 10 a.m. and noon. Staff can stop by and vote from noon on Thursday until Friday at 1 p.m., when the winner will be announced. First place gets a free night’s stay in a studio suite at the Guest House and second place gets lunch for two at the Lab Café.
EH&S: Fill Out Survey to Help Improve Lab's Safety Culture Employees are asked to share their experiences and opinions regarding the safety culture at Berkeley Lab, which will help identify strengths and prioritize areas for improvement. The survey should take about 10 minutes to complete and answers will be completely anonymous. No one at Berkeley Lab will see individual responses. The survey will close on Wednesday, Nov. 3. Special Event: Physics of Unicycle Basketball Among Activities at Cal Science and Engineering Fair Explore the wonders of science with activities for the whole family at the first-ever Cal Science & Engineering Festival. This free event will take place at UC Berkeley, on Spieker Plaza (located next to Haas Pavilion) on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2pm. Activities include “Unicycle Basketball: Science on the Court,” “The Many Colors of Gold at the Nanoscale,” “The Magic of Chemistry,” and “From Cellulose to Fuel” (sponsored by the Energy Biosciences Institute). Employee Development: Workshop on Dealing With Challenging People Struggling with how to respond to a challenging coworker, employee or supervisor? Berkeley Lab Learning Institute is offering two one-hour webinars covering basic interpersonal communication techniques that can help. Designed for those with little previous communication-skills training or who want a refresher, these interactive sessions will explore typical scenarios that occur at work and the most effective ways to react. Separate sessions are offered: an employee webinar on Nov. 2 at 11 a.m. (BLI0143) and a supervisor webinar on Nov. 3 (BLI0128), both at 11 a.m. Registration is required.
