After almost 15 years as Director of the Physics Division and 11 years as Associate Laboratory Director (ALD) for General Sciences, James Siegrist has announced that next summer he’ll be returning to his physics research, which runs the gamut from building silicon detectors, to searching for extra dimensions of space, to monitoring the nuclear-fission fuel cycle. Siegrist will stay in his posts until July to allow time for a comprehensive search for his replacements. More>
EH&S: HSS Assist Team at Lab Oct. 25 to Nov. 4 The Department of Energy’s Health, Safety and Security (HSS) Office of Independent Oversight will be visiting Berkeley Lab from Oct. 25 through Nov. 4 to review electrical safety programs. The HSS Assist Visit team first will concentrate on the Lab’s Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) program and will be working with Facilities and Environment, Health & Safety to evaluate performance and help identify opportunities for improvement. LOTO refers to a set of safeguards designed to prevent electric shock. While the focus initially will be on maintenance and construction programs, electrical safety programs throughout the Lab will be subject to review. Contact Marie Butson (x7456) for more information.
Effective immediately, Jim DeYoreo has been named Interim Director of the Molecular Foundry. DeYoreo, who joined the Foundry as Deputy Director for Research in 2007, conducts research spanning materials science, crystal growth, and biomineralization. DeYoreo has served on the National Academy of Sciences Committee on Nanotechnology for the Intelligence Community, and is currently Vice-President/President-Elect of the Materials Research Society. Prior to joining Berkeley Lab, he was the Deputy Director of the Laboratory Science and Technology Office at Livermore Lab.
UC is making significant changes this year to both the medical plans and monthly employee rates. Employees should do the following things to prepare for this year’s Open Enrollment period, which runs from 8 a.m. on Oct. 25 to 5 p.m. on Nov. 23:
• Visit the Health Benefits Open Enrollment website to review 2011 benefit plan options
• Read the Open Enrollment booklet mailed to your home address
• Check the 2011 medical plan rates (significant rate increases for Anthem Blue Cross Plus and Health Net)
• Learn about the new medical plans
• Review the new eligibility rules for children (due to health care reform)
• Attend an Open Enrollment training session
The Lab will participate in the annual Great California ShakeOut earthquake drill tomorrow at 10 a.m. Instructions will be provided via the Lab’s public address system. Building Emergency Teams in each building will guide staff to Emergency Assembly Areas and communicate with the Emergency Operations Center. The drill will be evaluated via an online evaluation sent to all employees, and an evaluation team will observe one of the buildings. The drill should last about 20 minutes. Most Lab IT services including Gmail, the lbl.gov website, and all services which utilize the Lab's LDAP username and password will be temporarily unavailable tomorrow evening, beginning at 6 p.m. and lasting for approximately one hour. When complete, the maintenance will increase the resiliency of key services in the event of a power outage. Incoming e-mail will be queued and delivered once service is restored. More>
Employees who want to learn more about the proposed changes to the University of California’s post-employment benefits are invited to attend a meeting today from 10 a.m. to noon in the Building 50 Auditorium. This is an opportunity for staff to provide feedback prior to the UC Regents meeting in November, at which these changes will be discussed. While the meeting will be webcast, staff will only be able to provide feedback at the live event. More>
The Red Wing work shoe vendor will be at the Lab tomorrow from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., on Lawrence Road near Strawberry Gate. Employees may be required to wear safety shoes to protect from potential hazards. Those working in areas where there is a danger of foot injuries due to falling or rolling objects, or objects piercing the sole, may be authorized to purchase safety shoes. More>
