Lab Creates New Energy Model for Chinese Cities

To tally the energy consumption of a city, the usual method is to add up all the energy used by residents—when they drive their car or turn on the air-conditioning—plus all the energy consumed by commercial buildings and industries in their day-to-day operations. But how should one account for the energy that went into building the office park where people work or paving the roads that people drive? And what about the energy required to make the clothes they are wearing? Scientists at Berkeley Lab have created a new energy model for Chinese cities that takes such factors into account. More>

Open House: Important Information for Guests, Volunteers

Open HouseAfter months of planning, the Lab’s Open House will finally take place tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Employees attending the event as guests and driving to the Lab are asked not to arrive before 10 a.m., to use Blackberry Gate (Strawberry will be closed), and to park in any lot except G1, G2, H1, H2, J, K1, K2, N2, Y and Z. Roadways near these lots will be blocked. Staff volunteering for the event should check in at Perseverance Hall upon arrival. Go here to read additional information for volunteers. Employees and guests working tomorrow must also enter through Blackberry Gate and can park in any lot except those listed above.

Rebecca RishellPeople: Rebecca Rishell Named New Deputy Director of Operations

Rebecca Rishell, Life Sciences Deputy for Operations, has been named Deputy Director of Operations for Berkeley Lab, reporting to Chief Operating Officer Jim Krupnick. Rishell, a Lab employee for 15 years, succeeds Anita Gursahani, who joined the UC Office of the President in August. “Rebecca brings a wealth of strategic institutional experience to the position,” says Krupnick. “She is a creative, hard-working problem-solver — and a good listener — all of which are essential skills when dealing with the kinds of complicated operations issues that we confront.” More>

Cha-ChaEmployee Activity: Dance Club Starts Cha-Cha Lessons, Zumba Classes

The Lab’s Dance Club is starting up its fall season with Cha-Cha lessons and Zumba exercise classes. Beginning Cha-Cha (partner dancing) will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays, starting today. Zumba (aerobic exercise classes) will be held on Thursdays, starting on Oct. 14. All classes are free and held in Building 76-235 from noon to 1 p.m. Call Jeff Philliber (x5257) for details.

IT: Google Calendar Class Today at 1:30 p.m.

The only Google calendar training class scheduled for October takes place today at 1:30 p.m. in Building 90-0026. Registration is required (BLI0942). The next class takes place Nov. 19.

HR Benefits: October Calendar of Events Available

From a postdoc benefits orientation to a Fidelity workshop on retirement savings, the HR Benefits department hosts a number of events to help staff manage their work and life. To assist in tracking upcoming events, the department produces a monthly calendar, and the October edition is now available.

EH&S: Safety-Related Systems Down Tonight

Due to a recently identified Microsoft security vulnerability, maintenance on several EHS systems will result in outages today from 5 to 8 p.m. The systems include AHD, Bio Authorization System, Course Builder, ERGO, HMS, JHA, and SJHA. Be sure to save all work and log out before 5 p.m. today.

Human Resources: Program for Employment Referral Awards Enhanced

The Employee Referral Incentive Program (ERIP) rewards eligible employees whose referrals of external candidates lead to successful hires. The HR Department has recently enhanced the program, effective today. The new bonus awards for employees will be $500 for regular jobs, $1,000 for those that are moderately hard to fill, and $2,000 for the most difficult. Employees must complete and submit an ERIP form to the ERIP coordinator. Go here for more information or contact the coordinator (x2902).
