Terry Hazen, a microbial ecologist with the Earth Sciences Division, is one of three speakers featured in the Fall 2010 edition of Discover Cal, a traveling public lecture series presented by UC Berkeley. The Fall 2010 lecture, which takes place today and Sunday in San Diego and Santa Monica, is titled Oil Spill Aftermath: Environmental Science and Corporate Responsibility. Employees interested in sharing engaging science activities with local students are invited to participate in next Monday's workshop, "Oobleck." In this workshop Lab employees will learn how to guide fifth graders to investigate the properties of solids and liquids as they observe, hypothesize, and experiment with oobleck, and gain insight into the skills and practices necessary to the real work of scientists. The workshop is part of the Lab's Center for Science and Engineering Education Berkeley Lab in School Settings (BLISS) program. It takes place on Monday, Nov. 8, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Building 7-211. Registration is required and lunch will be provided.

Spurred by the creation of the Ukulele Club at the Joint Genome Institute two years ago, the Lab’s main site recently formed its own club and is encouraging employees to join. The group meets each Friday at 11:30 a.m. in the Building 76 conference room (room 235). All levels are welcome and extra ukuleles are available. Participating staff will learn to play the instrument and develop their strumming and singing skills. “The goal is for members to have fun, learn, improve and make music,” said club president Tim Roberts. Go here to watch a video of the club performing at the Open House last month. Contact Roberts for more information.
The Lab will host an onsite interactive UC Sexual Harassment Prevention training course on Monday, Nov. 15, from 10 a.m. to noon in the Building 66 Auditorium.
