Stephen Leone, a senior scientist at Berkeley Lab, member of the National Academy of Sciences, and a chemistry and physics professor at UC Berkeley, has been appointed as Division Director of Berkeley Lab’s Chemical Sciences Division (CSD) by Lab Director Paul Alivisatos, effective immediately.
“As Division Director, Steve Leone will help lead the Chemical Science Division’s efforts related to Lab initiatives such as the Next Generation Light Source and Carbon Cycle 2.0 and expand the Lab’s work in chemical sciences” said Alivisatos. “I am thrilled we have a top-notch scientist to lead this outstanding group of researchers.” More>
To a hungry fish on the prowl, the split-second neural processing required to see and gobble up prey is a matter of survival. To scientists, it’s a window into how our brain coordinates eye motions that enable us to make our way in a world full of danger and opportunity. This process is now better understood thanks to a team of scientists who imaged the activity of individual neurons in zebrafish. “We can see, for the first time, how neurons in the fish’s optic tectum take visual information and convert it into an output that drives action,” says Ehud Isacoff, a biophysicist who holds joint appointments with the Lab’s Physical Biosciences and Materials Sciences Divisions. Special Event: Winner of Lab's First Pumpkin Carving Contest Announced More than 35 pumpkins were submitted for last week’s pumpkin carving contest sponsored by the Guest House and Lab Café. Based on voting by staff, the grand-prize winner was “Cheshire Cat” by Sonya Neely (OCFO). Second prize went to “LBL Boo” by Roberto Melgoza-Zermeno (Facilities), followed by “Mountain Lion” by a team from the Environmental Energy Technologies Division. A special thanks goes to Katie Solinger, Sunil Chacko and Brendan Walsh of the Lab Café for securing the generous donation of 50 pumpkins from our produce purveyors, Daylight Produce.

Should you turn it off, or leave it in "sleep" mode? Some say it's better to shut down, but others say that shutting down and starting up again uses more power than letting your machine sleep. Who's right? First things first: Turning your computer off, then on again does not use more power than leaving it on in "sleep" mode. "That's a myth," says Bruce Nordman, an energy efficiency researcher at Berkeley Lab. That said, trying to remember to shut down your machine every night isn't necessarily the most effective energy-savings strategy. More>
