Approximately 20 U.S. Congressional and California legislative staff members – including representatives of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senators Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein, and Congresswoman Barbara Lee – visited the Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI) on Tuesday for scientific briefings and a tour of the facilities. The visit was organized by Berkeley Lab's Don Medley (Federal Government Relations) and Sam Chapman (State and Community Relations). "Keeping congressional and legislative staff abreast of research and technology development at the Lab is critical,” Medley says. “We had a great turn-out for this event and participants said they wanted more briefings on different topics in the future, which we plan to do."
California Congressman John Garamendi (10th District) will address the Berkeley Lab community today at 12:10 p.m. in the Building 50 Auditorium. Garamendi serves on the House of Representatives Committee on Science and Technology. The Congressman will discuss his committee's recent passage of legislation reauthorizing the America COMPETES act and the ARPA-E program.

Highlights include coverage from the JGI's fifth annual Genomics of Energy and Environment Meeting. Videos of the talks are available. Construction: Asbestos Removal at Bevatron Demolition Site As part of the demolition of the Bevatron and Building 51, exterior siding is being removed. Because the siding is composed of Transite, a non-friable asbestos-cement composite, workers are wearing personal protective equipment and respirators as a preventive safety measure. Monitoring of the local area will be performed to ensure that there has been no exposure to asbestos outside the immediate work area. More>
