Animated Short on JGI Efforts to Help Generate Biofuels

The Joint Genome Institute, in collaboration with recent graduates and staff at the Ex'pression College for Digital Arts, have developed a short animation, "Energy Genomic," to describe the role JGI plays in advancing the Department of Energy mission by characterizing plants and microbes for next generation biofuels. People: ALS Scientist Wins Inaugural VUVX Conference Award

rotenbergEli Rotenberg, an Advanced Light Source researcher who is responsible for operations and scientific programs at Beamline 7.0, has been chosen to receive the first VUVX (for Vacuum UltraViolet and X-ray) Conference Award. Rotenberg won this “mid-career award” in the field of condensed matter physics for “his outstanding contributions to angle-resolved photoemission with synchrotron radiation in the study of surfaces and electronic structure.” Rotenberg will receive the award, which comes with a cash prize of $5,000, at the conference on Vacuum Ultraviolet and X-ray Physics, which takes place this July in Vancouver at the University of British Columbia.

e-verify logoHR: E-Verify System in Process at the Lab

As announced in January, the Lab has begun the E-Verification process of all new and existing employees. E-Verify is an Internet-based system operated by the U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services and the Social Security Administration to help U.S. employers verify employment eligibility. As mandated by Presidential Executive Order 13465, this process may require employees to provide additional information related to their I-9 form, or in some cases complete a new I-9 form. EH&S: New Online Course for Supervisors and Work Leads

online courseEHS 0042 is a new online course covering EH&S Roles and Responsibilities of Supervisors and Work Leads. EHS 0042 is approximately 1.5 hours long and replaces instructor-led EH&S Supervisor/Work Lead Training courses (EHS 26, 22, 33, 34, and 27) that were previously required. EHS 0042 is a requirement for new supervisors and work leads and for those who have not completed EHS 26, 33, or 34. The requirements will go into effect on April 12. HR Benefits: Last Webinar on Restart of Retirement Contributions is Wednesday

Tomorrow is the final webinar on the restart of contributions to the UC Retirement Plan (UCRP), scheduled to begin in mid-April and affect May earnings. It takes place at 11 a.m. Registration is required (BLI0938).

HR Benefits: April Calendar of Events is Available

From a kick-off of the Active for Life health program to a workshop on building an investment portfolio, the HR Benefits department hosts a number of events to help staff manage their work and life. To assist in tracking upcoming events, the department produces a monthly calendar, and the April edition is now available.
