Aaron Albers, a postdoctoral fellow at the Molecular Foundry, is a 2010 recipient of the Ernest Orlando Lawrence Fellowship, which recognizes outstanding individuals from historically underrepresented groups in emerging scientific research. Associate Lab Director for Computing Sciences Horst Simon was interviewed by Microsoft Technical Computing for its Modeling the World website. In a short video excerpt on Facebook, Simon discusses the inevitability of parallelism, a new Moore’s Law, and the challenges to come — like programming a billion cores. In the longer video (seven minutes), Simon discusses his personal fascination with computers as well as their current and future applications.
Demolition of Bldg. 50D begins tomorrow. Barricades will be erected around the 50D building and the adjacent vending machines for the duration of work. There will be minimal parking and traffic impacts to the H2 parking lot. Starting July 10, a crane will be erected inside the H2 lot on Saturdays and Sundays to handle the heavy debris removal. The newly established International Center for Computational Science will present a five-day course to teach how to use multicore devices for scientific computing, scale parallel code to tens of thousands of CPU cores, and more.
