Emily Chen still vividly remembers the lecture on gecko feet. She was an eighth grader attending Berkeley Lab’s Nano*High program and heard how gecko feet might translate into a new adhesive product based on carbon nanotubes. “I walked away curious about academia and convinced that I could be part of the next generation to make revolutionary and meaningful scientific discoveries,” said Chen. Larry Pezzaglia (pictured) enjoyed his first internship in the Computing Sciences Division so much he came back a second summer. Then he went on to major in computer science at UC Berkeley, worked part-time at Berkeley Lab during the summers, and after graduating returned to the Lab again, where he is now a system administrator for the division. Computing: ESnet Launches New Blog Called 'Network Matters'Berkeley Lab's ESnet has historically kept a low profile ("We are like a utility; we only get called when something goes down, and we are very reliable"). But last year it received a rather large infusion ($62 million) in ARRA funding to ramp up the speed and effectiveness of scientific networking for the Department of Energy. Now ESnet has a new blog called “Network Matters” about projects in progress and the large scale science projects ESnet makes possible. Research: Enzyme Prevents Misfolding; Offers Clues to Alzheimer'sAlzheimer’s disease belongs to a family of conditions classified as amyloidoses, in which misfolded proteins clump into plaques or fibrils instead of taking their normal, soluble form. Why this happens and how it might be prevented has been the subject of intense research for decades. Equally of interest is how most proteins have evolved to avoid misfolding. QB3 and Berkeley Lab researchers Susan Marqusee and Carlos Bustamante show in new research that, in T4 lysozyme — an enzyme related to one responsible for a form of amyloidosis — a subtle detail of topology ensures that the protein either folds all at once or not at all, avoiding dangerous intermediates. The Lab’s Dance Club will launch its Rumba instruction series on Monday, with classes on Mondays and Wednesdays from noon to 1 p.m. in the Building 76 recreation room (76-235). The club also offers regular Tahitian cardio classes on Thursdays, same time and location. And on Friday, June 25, the club will host its Summer Gala at the Lake Merritt Dance Center in Oakland.
