World Cup football (or what Americans call "soccer") is around the corner and in keeping with the spirit of the biggest sporting event in the world, Berkeley Lab's Public Affairs Department is encouraging Lab staff and students to wear their favorite-team colors for a group photo at noon on Thursday, June 10. The location will be the grassy area near the entrance to the cafeteria. We will tabulate the number of shirts supporting any of the 32 contesting teams and name the winner and run the photo the following day. (The fact that the head of Public Affairs is a fan of the Azzurri will not influence the results.)
Employees are invited to a talk by Michael Hingson, who escaped the 9/11 World Trade Center attack with his guide dog. He’ll discuss how this experience affected him, the strength of the human/animal bond, and what it’s like to be blind in a “sighted world” today at noon in the Building 50 Auditorium. The Lab’s Diversity Council is sponsoring the event, the first installment of its “Perspectives on Diversity” lecture series.
Aaron Albers of the Materials Sciences Division, Gina Lamendella of the Earth Sciences Division, and Natasha Yeung of the Life Sciences Division have each been awarded an E.O. Lawrence Fellowship, effective June 1. The fellowship recognizes outstanding individuals in new and emerging scientific and engineering research fields from historically underrepresented groups and provides 50 percent of the recipient’s salary for up to three years. The award is sponsored by the Lab’s Human Resources and Workforce Diversity offices.
The Lab’s Health Care Facilitator will host its annual Wellness & Meet the EAA Clubs Fair today from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. outside the cafeteria. The fair will feature information booths, performances, and the “UC Walks Day at the Lab” event. Sign up for the half-hour walk by 1 p.m. and get a free t-shirt while supplies last (ID badge required). The Lab’s Bicycle Coalition is sponsoring free minor bike tune-ups, courtesy of The Missing Link bike store. The bike tune-ups and UC Walks registration will both be stationed in the cafeteria parking lot.
The Health Care Facilitator wants to remind employees that June is National Safety Month. When warm weather arrives, outdoor grilling becomes popular. Always use a meat thermometer to ensure that you cook meat thoroughly. To prevent cross-contamination, always put cooked meat on a clean platter rather than back on the one that held the raw meat. Whenever you cook outside, be sure to keep cold food cold and hot food hot. Be sure to refrigerate leftovers promptly. More>
