E-Verify is an Internet-based system operated by the U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services in partnership with the Social Security Administration to help U.S. employers verify the employment eligibility of their employees. As mandated by Presidential Executive Order 13465 last October, the Lab officially became part of the E-Verify system and on Feb. 1 will begin the verification of all newly hired employees and, eventually, the entire workforce. For more information, contact Ben Ortega (x6326).
Employees are invited to attend an all-hands meeting hosted by Lab Director Paul Alivisatos on Thursday at 10 a.m. in the Building 50 Auditorium. He will discuss the latest research and community-relations objectives, space planning goals, and the future of a multidisciplinary science initiative called Carbon Cycle 2.0. The meeting will also be webcast live; the link will be included in Today at Berkeley Lab that morning.
The Lab’s Philanthropy Club is hosting a visit by the Red Cross Bloodmobile on Tuesday, Feb. 2, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the cafeteria parking lot. Go here to make an appointment, using “LBL” as the sponsor code. For more information, contact Heather Pinto (x4181).
An article in Friday’s edition of Today at Berkeley Lab on Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) listed the incorrect information on when a permit is required. A LOTO permit is only required whenever a hazardous energy source is locked out by a subcontractor or vendor, whether or not Lab employees are involved with the work.
Beginning Feb. 26, the Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) training will require both classroom and practical training. The practical training will involve hands-on activities to allow employees the opportunity to demonstrate they can perform LOTO correctly. Everyone who performs LOTO will be required to take the classroom training (EHS0358) before taking the new practical training (EHS0359). The initial classroom and practical training expires after a year; staff will then be required to take the online refresher training (EHS0258) and the practical training (EHS0359) annually. Go here for a description of what classes are required and applicable dates.
