Institute can be found in the summer edition of the EBI Bulletin, a quarterly newsletter. The latest issue features a report from the recent conference at UC Berkeley on the bioeconomy, where experts discussed what a new biofuels industry will bring. Other stories look at research on greenhouse gas calculations for ecosystems, indirect land use impact assessments, and a catalytic conversion process for a potential new biofuel. Also included is a look at some of the newest plants being studied at the EBI Energy Farm in Illinois as potential biofuel feedstocks. More>
Berkeley Lab scientists delivered nearly 100 presentations at the American Chemical Society’s Fall 2010 national meeting in Boston last week. Major areas of emphasis included chemistry for applications in medicine, energy, the environment and more. Over the next few days, Today at Berkeley Lab will highlight some of these talks, starting with medicine. Featured presenters in this area included Christopher Chang, Nicholas Stephanopoulos, Wesley Wu, Victoria Tran, and Berend Smit. More>
The Lab is hosting a community Open House on Saturday, Oct. 2, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Employees planning to attend the event must register and select from a morning or afternoon session. Visit the Open House website for more details. Employees and users working that day do not need to register; however, parking and roadways near the event area will be restricted. Blackberry Gate personnel will provide staff with a list of open parking lots when entering the Lab that day. Those interested in volunteering for Open House or performing as part of the talent showcase can send e-mail here.
The Public Affairs Office is looking for volunteers to join the outgoing and charismatic staff at the Lab’s booth at the Solano Stroll. The Stroll — this year themed “A Global A-Faire” — is a daylong festival featuring a parade, food, entertainment, and booths staffed by local businesses and organizations. Berkeley Lab will be among those organizations and is looking for volunteers to answer questions and hand out literature for two-hour intervals during the Stroll, which runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Those interested in participating can send e-mail here.
Diabetes can cause serious health complications including heart disease, blindness, and kidney failure. Diabetes is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. In the workplace, diabetes can result in lost productivity, restricted activities, unsafe performance, and disability. Hemoglobin A1C is a non-fasting blood test that determines blood sugar levels over the preceding three-month period and is used to help diagnose diabetes. Health Services is offering a free hemoglobin A1C test to all employees on Wednesday, Sept. 15, from 8 a.m. to noon. Call x6266 for an appointment.
Trying to lose some extra pounds, but having a tough time? Consider participating in the Lab’s onsite Weight Watchers meetings. A new session will begin on Wednesday, Sept. 15, at noon in Building 26-124. Cost is $186 for 17 weeks. To sign up, call x6266.
