Lab Guests

The Goats Are Back, Helping to Keep the Lab Safe

goat

The brush-eating goats are back at the Lab for their annual summer visit, eating dry grasses from the hillsides to reduce fire risk. The goats are an essential element of the Lab’s wildland management program — a natural way of keeping vegetation at low, fire-resistant levels. The goats at Berkeley Lab eat their way through 40 to 50 acres each season.
