Open House on Oct. 2Special Event: Open House on Oct. 2; Registration Required; Talent Sought

The Lab will be hosting a community open house on Saturday, Oct. 2, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will take place along the Advanced Light Source, cafeteria parking lot, and Building 50 corridor. To ensure safe and comfortable access to all activities, the day will be split into a morning and afternoon session, and registration is required to attend. Employees can drive to the event, but must present a printout of their registration confirmation and their parking permit to Blackberry Gate personnel. People: Researchers Now Members of DOE Environment Group

Susan HubbardLinfeng RaoLinfeng Rao (right) of the Chemical Sciences Division and Susan Hubbard of the Earth Sciences Division have been invited to be members of the Department of Energy Environmental Management Technical Experts Group. This group was recently formed to provide technical expertise on a range of factors affecting DOE’s effort to safely cleanup the environmental legacy brought about from five decades of nuclear weapons development and government-sponsored nuclear energy research. Rao and Hubbard were chosen based on their experience in environmental management research and their expertise in actinide chemistry and subsurface science, respectively.

Special Event: Volunteers Sought for Solano Stroll on Sept. 12

Solano StrollIt's that time of the year! The Berkeley Lab Public Affairs Office is looking for volunteers to join the outgoing and charismatic staff at the Lab’s booth at the Solano Stroll. Solano Stroll is an annual, daylong event that features a parade down Solano Avenue, exotic food, live entertainment, and informational booths staffed by local businesses and organizations. Berkeley Lab will be among those organizations and is looking for volunteers to answer questions and hand out literature for two-hour intervals during the Stroll, which runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Those interested in participating can send e-mail here.

People: Math Group's Persson, Wilkening Win Early Career Awards

Per-Olof PerssonJon WilkeningPer-Olof Persson (right) and Jon Wilkening of the Computational Research Division’s Math Group have won prestigious career awards from the U.S. Air Force and the National Science Foundation, respectively. Persson was one of 38 researchers who submitted winning research proposals through the Air Force’s Young Investigator Research Program. He will work on efficient and robust high-order methods for fluid and solid mechanics. Wilkening received a National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development Award to conduct research in optimization and continuation methods in fluid mechanics. As part of his five-year award, Wilkening also plans to host students in the Department of Energy’s Computational Science Graduate Fellowship program.
