Andrew Peterson, safety coordinator for Life Sciences, found that computer-related injuries in that division were very prevalent. He wanted to change that and came up with a clever way to raise awareness of ergonomic safety. He fashioned a flyer featuring Star Trek's Spock and Uhuru and posted them inside the stalls of bathrooms. “I thought the Star Trek characters would be fun and capture people’s attention,” said Peterson. And capture attention they have. The flyer has been featured in Wired, Gizmodo, and other tech blogs, and Peterson has received numerous requests for copies from across the country and Europe. Research: Towers Help Scientists Listen to the Earth as She 'Breathes' It takes a global village to monitor and analyze trends in Earth’s “breathing” — or the exchange of carbon dioxide, water vapor and energy between plants and the planet’s atmosphere. And with the help of database specialists in Berkeley Lab's Computational Research Division, all of this data can now be consolidated for analysis via an online portal called Fluxdata.org. "Fluxdata.org gives researchers access to field data collected at hundreds of sites around the globe, with a few clicks of the mouse," says Deb Agarwal, who led the development of Fluxdata.org. More>
The League of Women Voters of Berkeley/Albany/ Emeryville is honoring Art Rosenfeld with its "Spirit of the League" award at its 11th Annual Community Luncheon today. Rosenfeld, who recently completed 10 years on the California Energy Commission and is now back at the Lab, is being recognized "for his lifetime of teaching us how to live better lives while using less energy." The League is also giving an award to the Environmental Energy Technologies Division "for elegantly simple solutions that improve quality of life."
It’s been almost a year since an agreement was signed to bring apprentice electricians to the Lab for training, and the students and their teachers seem to agree that the program has been a success. “The apprentices are motivated, follow directions, and I’m completely satisfied with their performance,” said Lab electrician supervisor Steve Cooper. “The apprentices really enjoy working here. It’s a win-win.” And the apprentices say they also provide journeymen with “fresh minds” and new ways of doing things. More>
