Artificial skin that bestows the sense of touch on prosthetic limbs. Nanochips that control the latest smart phones and devices. Sheets of low cost solar cells as easy to install as unrolling a carpet. All future scenarios, yes, but ones that Berkeley Lab materials scientist and UC Berkeley professor Ali Javey is working to realize in the next decade or so. Javey, a chemist by training, develops new electronic materials and methods of processing existing materials destined for future applications. Working at the confluence of electrical engineering and materials science, chemistry and physics, Javey has already achieved several breakthroughs, including a novel method for nanowire printing. Lab Director Paul Alivisatos has been honored with an “Inventor of the Year” award from the Silicon Valley Intellectual Property Law Association (SVIPLA). Alivisatos was recognized for his work with nanocrystals and their application to the construction of lightweight, flexible solar cells. Since 1977, SVIPLA has honored annually a member of the intellectual property community as its Inventor of the Year. The recipients have made outstanding contributions to the technology industry, such as integrated circuit technology, basic gene splicing, automobile navigation systems, over-the-counter drug delivery systems, the bar code, and the optical mouse.
The Emergency Services Program will conduct the Lab’s annual disaster exercise today. The exercise will evaluate the Lab’s Emergency Response Organization and Alameda County Fire Department response to a plausible scenario onsite. Buildings 26, 48, 65, 70A and Blackberry Gate will be the sites participating in the exercise. "Exercise in Progress" signs will be posted around the areas. Shuttle buses should not be impacted during the exercise.
Staff who want to submit a design for this year’s Runaround t-shirt design contest have until Friday to e-mail a JPEG or PDF file to [email protected]. Be sure to include an employee ID and telephone number, as well as a brief description of your design. The winner will be announced in late September. The Red Wing Work Shoe vendor will be onsite tomorrow from 7:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. The shoemobile will be located on Lawrence Road near Strawberry Gate. Employees may be required to wear safety shoes to protect from potential hazards. Those working in areas where there is a danger of foot injuries due to falling or rolling objects, or objects piercing the sole, may be authorized to purchase safety shoes. More>

UC does not participate in the California State Disability Insurance program. Those who enroll in UC’s Supplemental Disability plan must select a waiting period. Employees with a lot of savings and/or sick leave might choose a longer waiting period to pay lower premiums. New employees without much sick leave might choose a shorter waiting period. The length of your waiting period can always be increased later, but to shorten it, a statement of health and approval by the insurance company is required. More>
