Yakout Mansour, president and CEO of the California Independent System Operator, will present a talk on “Striking the Balance: Reliability, Cost, and the Environment” on Friday, Aug. 27, at noon in the Building 66 Auditorium. Mansour will offer his perspectives on the key challenges facing continued operation of reliable, economically efficient, and environmental responsible electric power system, including national and state regulatory and environmental policies, technological changes, and other regional and global economic factors. Berkeley Lab pioneered nuclear medicine and the treatment of cancer with particle accelerators, including the best therapy for many tumors, carbon-ion beams. On Oct. 26-29 the Accelerator and Fusion Research Division will hold the 13th Workshop on Ion Beams in Biology and Medicine (IBIBAM) at the Claremont Hotel, with experts from around the world. The oral program is by invitation, but any scholar in the field can propose a poster presentation. See details under the “Program” section of the IBIBAM website. Blair Horst of the Lab’s Facilities Division is the recipient of an Energy Management Award, bestowed by the Department of Energy and the Federal Energy Management Program. He was honored for his “outstanding individual achievements in energy, water, and fleet management in FY 2009” and efforts to meet “federal energy management goals by reducing energy costs and implementing innovative practices and technologies” at Berkeley Lab. Horst will be honored at ceremony in Washington D.C. in October.
People: EETD's Tschudi Instructs First Grads of Data Center Energy Practitioners Program The U.S. Department of Energy's Industrial Technologies Program recently announced the first group of participants who have completed the Data Center Energy Practitioner training program. The goal of the program is to train diverse professionals who will become energy experts with the experience to conduct energy assessments for data centers, a growing and energy-intensive industry. The Lab’s 904 warehouse located at 380 Carlson Blvd. in Richmond is changing its hours of operation. The doors will be open from noon to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. Those needing access outside those hours can contact Bill Llewellyn (734-1342) or Tom Hardy (x4938).
McMillan Road between Buildings 71 and 17 will be closed tomorrow and next Saturday, Aug. 21, for paving work. Detour signs will be put in place. Also, tree work along Horseshoe Curve (below Blackberry Gate) will require some lane closures tomorrow. Drivers in this area should follow flagger instructions.

The Lab’s Trunked Two-Way radio system will be out of service tomorrow from 8 a.m. to noon. Employees who use two-way radios should make necessary arrangements for alternative communications during this period.
