Effective immediately, Ashok Gadgil has been appointed Director of the Environmental Energy Technologies Division (EETD). Gadgil, who has been Acting Director of EETD since previous director Arun Majumdar was chosen to head DOE’s Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy in 2009, is a recognized researcher and inventor and a humanitarian renowned for such as inventions as UC Waterworks and the Darfur stove.
In announcing the appointment, Berkeley Lab Director Paul Alivisatos wrote, “As Division Director, Gadgil’s leadership on energy and environmental research and his projects bringing solutions to the developing world will continue to align the division well with Berkeley Lab’s energy and environmental initiatives. Please join me in congratulating Ashok and in wishing him well in this important leadership position.” More>

The final Carbon Smackdown match takes place today at noon in the Building 50 Auditorium. Juan Meza of the Computational Research Division will reveal how scientists use computer visualizations to accelerate climate research and discuss the development of next-generation clean energy technologies such as wind turbines and solar cells. The U.S. was one of the fastest-growing wind-power markets in the world in 2009, second only to China, according to a new Berkeley Lab report. Wind-power additions in the United States set a new record in 2009, with 10 gigawatts of new capacity installed, representing a $21 billion investment. The report was written by Ryan Wiser and Mark Bolinger of the Environmental Energy Technologies Division. They also found that a growing percentage of U.S. wind-turbine equipment is being manufactured domestically. Download the report here.
People: NERSC's Jonathan Carter Named Deputy for Computing SciencesJonathan Carter, who has the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center's (NERSC's) User Services Group since 2005, has been named as the new Computing Sciences Deputy, succeeding Michael Banda, who joined the Advanced Light Source earlier this year. Carter was one of the first new employees hired when NERSC moved to Berkeley Lab in 1996. More>
