After nearly a decade, the Lab will once again throw open its doors for the local community. The event — themed “Local Solutions to Global Problems: It’s All About Energy” — will take place Saturday, Oct. 2, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Exhibits will highlight many of the exciting scientific endeavors taking place around the Lab, from cool-roof technology and carbon sequestration to supernova searches and artificial photosynthesis. Registration will be required for all attendees, including employees. To ensure safe and comfortable access to all activities, visitors will be asked to attend either the morning or afternoon session. Additional details will be announced in TABL as they develop. Scientists used the powerful x-ray beams of Berkeley Lab’s Advanced Light Source to discover that exposure to high levels of irradiation can lead to drastic losses in bone strength, ductility and toughness. The study examined the changes in crack path and toughening mechanisms in human cortical bone. The research was led by Berkeley Lab materials scientist Robert Ritchie. More>
Outreach: Poster Session Features Work by Summer Interns A poster session will be held on Wednesday from 3 to 5 p.m. in the cafeteria, featuring the work of 43 local teachers and high school students who have spent their summer participating in the Lab’s mentored internship programs. These internships provide the opportunity to work with world-class scientists and engineers on projects related to the Lab’s cutting edge research programs. The event is one of the rare opportunities to bring together examples of the breadth of research conducted at the Lab through the experience of the teachers and students taking part in the programs here. The poster session is hosted by Berkeley Lab’s Center for Science & Engineering Education.
Funding Opportunity: GE Hosts ‘Ecomagination’ ChallengeBerkeley Lab researchers are invited to submit their clean energy and energy efficiency ideas to GE’s Ecomagination Challenge. At stake are five $100,000 awards plus the opportunity for millions of dollars in further investment. Visitors can also read and vote for ideas submitted to date. The energy-saving idea with the most online votes will win $50,000. The Lab’s Tech Transfer staff strongly recommends that researchers consult them prior to entering the contest. Special Event: Free Thursday Concerts in Berkeley Through August Employees who enjoy jazz and can venture to downtown Berkeley during their lunch break every Thursday during the month of August for a series of free concerts. The performances start at noon on Bartlett’s patio, next to the Berkeley Public Library. The first show takes place Thursday with the Zach Partridge Trio, followed by Opaque on Aug. 12, Isaac Schwartz and Arian Shafiee on Aug. 19, and Erika Oba Quartet on Aug. 26. The concerts are sponsored by the Downtown Berkeley Association.
