Berkeley Lab physicist Richard Muller joins Denzel Washington, Frances Ford Coppola, jazz musician Sonny Rollins and 225 other leaders in the sciences, social sciences, humanities, the arts, business, and public affairs who have been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. The 230-year-old academy is one of the nation’s oldest and most prestigious honorary societies. Since its founding by John Adams, James Bowdoin, John Hancock, and other scholar-patriots, the organization has elected leading “thinkers and doers” from each generation, such as Benjamin Franklin, Daniel Webster, and Albert Einstein. Joining Muller is Andrea Bertozzi, sister of Berkeley Lab researcher Carolyn Bertozzi and professor of mathematics at UCLA. More>

The Badge Office will be closed tomorrow to accommodate hardware migration and new software installation. No badges will be issued that day, and individual buildings will experience a brief two-minute card access outage. During this time readers will not function and normally unlocked doors will be secured. Should you encounter such an occurrence, be patient. All functions will return to normal shortly. The Badge Office will reopen Monday at 8 a.m. Questions can be directed to the Site Access Manager (x4855).
Staff are invited to stop by the lawn area outside the cafeteria to enjoy the Lab’s Earth Day Fair. The event runs from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and features information booths on the Lab’s green initiatives as well as local vendors and non-profits. The cafeteria is offering a special Earth Day menu for purchase.
Employees interested in sharing engaging science activities with local students are invited to participate in an upcoming workshop on “Secret Formulas.” Employees will learn how to guide first graders to investigate the properties of substances as they make their own personal brands of paste, toothpaste, cola, and ice cream. The workshop is part of the Lab's Center for Science and Engineering Education Berkeley Lab in School Settings (BLISS) program. It takes place on Monday, April 26, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Building 7-211. Registration is required and lunch will be provided.
To help celebrate Earth Day, the Lab’s Zimride ride-sharing service is offering employees who sign up for the program by today a chance to win a $50 Target gift card.
