A new study by scientists in Berkeley Lab's Environmental Energy Technologies Division examines the workforce needs of the energy efficiency services sector and finds that the speed with which employment will grow will depend in part on how effectively the nation deploys training and education programs for the energy efficiency workforce. “There is a shortage of formal training programs in energy efficiency, and an extremely high demand right now,” says researcher Charles Goldman. Lab employees are invited to bring girls and boys, ages 9 to 16, for a day of science and fun at the annual Daughters and Sons to Work Day event, to be held Thursday, April 22. This is a very popular program and space is limited to 120 children, so early registration is advised. Go here to access a registration packet. Review it with your guest, fill out the form, then send it in with a check to UC Regents for $25 per child (limit of three children). The cost covers refreshments, lunch, and a commemorative T-shirt. Deadline for registration is Friday, April 16. Those interested in volunteering for the event will receive a free T-shirt and lunch. If interested, contact Joe Crippen (x5816).
The Lab’s move to Gmail is in full swing, with nearly 1,000 users already migrated. Gmail and Google Calendar training classes are available for everyone. You can learn more about the Gmail migration, the migration schedule, and the class schedule at lbl.gov/google.
Employees who face work-related conflict — such as disputes, interpersonal difficulties with colleagues, subordinates or supervisors, preparing for a difficult conversation, harassment, cultural misunderstandings, bureaucratic frustrations, or incivility — can utilize the Lab’s new Ombuds Service. The ombuds provides assistance that is confidential, informal, neutral and independent of the Lab’s administrative structure. Go here to learn more and watch a welcome video by Ombuds Sara Thacker.
Starting today, passengers on the uphill Blue route can board or get off the shuttle bus at two new stops: Building 55 and Building 67/72.
