Even Fox calls him "the smartest contestant in ‘Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader?’ history." George Smoot (pictured at far left) takes the podium on the show’s season finale, airing tonight at 8 p.m. on Fox’s KTVU Channel 2. Tackling questions from elementary school curricula, many of which are depressingly difficult, Smoot will attempt to become the show’s newest million-dollar winner. And there’s a chance one or two other denizens of Berkeley Lab may make an appearance, if only to heckle. A Fox crew taped remarks from the Physics Division’s Jim Siegrist, Diana Attia, Anthony Spadafora, Anze Slosar, Alexie Leauthaud, Oliver Zahn, Reiko Nakajima, Melissa Barclay and Jeanne Miller, some or all of whom may make it to the airwaves.
Elton Cairns, former Director of the Environmental Energy Technologies Division (EETD), has been selected to deliver the 2009-10 Sackler Lecture at Tel Aviv University, Israel. Sackler Lectureships are sponsored by the Mortimer and Raymond Sackler Institute of Advanced Studies. The program seeks to promote academic excellence at Tel Aviv University by inviting and hosting eminent experts in different academic fields from outside the University. Cairns will deliver his lecture this spring. His research in EETD addresses fundamental properties and behavior of electrodes employed in high-performance rechargeable batteries and fuel cells.
Inventory: Laptop Security Notice from the Lab’s Chief Information OfficerLaptops are key tools for productivity, but their small size and portability makes them easy to lose and attractive targets for theft. Older laptops that are kept around "just in case" are often lost; and theft from homes, cars, campus, and on travel are all common occurrences. Lab employees are responsible for ensuring that DOE property, including laptops, is appropriately protected, and lack of due care by our community puts the Lab at risk, even if the dollar value of an item is relatively small. Special Event: Personalized Medicine Topic of Next ‘Women in Science’ Meeting The East Bay Association for Women In Science will hold its next meeting Thursday, Sept. 24, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Novartis in Emeryville. Lab researcher Laura Heiser (Life Sciences) will discuss "The Road to Personalized Medicine: Identifying Therapeutic Agents Effective Against Subpopulations of Breast Cancers." Facilities will be repaving two areas this weekend, affecting access to Building 90 and Lawrence Road. Alvarez Road will be closed from Building 64 to the Building 55 parking lot. Traffic in and out of Building 90 will be detoured via Building 71 and Chamberlain Road. Lawrence Road will be closed from the intersection of Glaser and S Road (leading up to Building 76).
