Joydip Kundu, the budget examiner for the Department of Energy’s Office of Science, visited the Lab Tuesday to learn more about the research that takes place here. He met with several division directors, toured the Advanced Light Source, Joint BioEnergy Institute, Joint Genome Institute, Molecular Foundry, and the National Center for Electron Microscopy, and heard presentations on the Lab’s energy initiatives, the Joint Dark Energy Mission, the Next Generation Light Source, and carbon capture and sequestration. The Life Sciences & Genomics Division's seminar series resumes again on Tuesday with a talk by Phoebe Stewart of the Vanderbilt University Medical Center. She’ll discuss "Visualizing the Structures and Conformational Changes of Biological Nanomachines with CryoEM.” Seminars take place most Tuesdays at 4 p.m. in the Building 66 Auditorium. To ensure safety, Lab staff and guests are reminded that they can only board or exit shuttle buses from designated stops. These stops are marked with the sign pictured at right. Lab employees must show their Lab ID when boarding the bus offsite. Visitors must have a pass that has been pre-arranged, or provide a letter from their host on Lab letterhead. UC Berkeley students and faculty as well as DOE and UCOP employees can board the bus with their ID cards. More>
[Live Science] Microbes such as the yeast we commonly use in baking bread and fermenting beer are now being engineered to produce the next generation of biofuels. Jay Keasling, acting deputy director of Berkeley Lab, is leading a team of scientists in an effort to manipulate the chemistry within bacteria so they will produce fuel from sugar. At the Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI), one of three research centers set up by the Department of Energy for the research and development of biofuels, Keasling is utilizing synthetic biology techniques involving chemistry, genetic engineering and molecular biology. Employee Activity: New Tai-Chi Club Formed; Will Meet on TuesdaysThe latest addition to the Lab’s many Employee Activities Association clubs is the Tai-Chi Club. Tai Chi is an ancient form of meditative exercise for the body, with an emphasis on balance, alignment, motor control, and rhythm. The Lab’s classes will be taught by Qinghai Zhang of the Computational Research Division. He learned in the Chen village where the art form was invented and is a master instructor.
