Simulations Show How Emission Cuts Reduce Global Warming Effects

The threat of global warming can still be greatly diminished if nations cut emissions of heat-trapping greenhouse gases by 70 percent this century, according to a study led by scientists at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). While global temperatures would rise, the most dangerous potential aspects of climate change, including massive losses of Arctic sea ice and permafrost and significant sea level rise, could be partially avoided. NCAR used the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC), located at Berkeley Lab, for their simulations. More>

As funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act start to flow into Berkeley Lab, much of that money is flowing out to small businesses. To date, the Lab has been awarded more than $220 million in Recovery Act funds, a large part of which will go toward infrastructure projects and buying and upgrading computers and scientific equipment, such as microscopes, lasers and gene sequencers. So far, $38.2 million in Recovery Act subcontracts have been awarded, of which 58 percent went to small businesses. That far exceeds the federal government’s goal for the Recovery Act of giving 23 percent of prime contracts to small firms. More>
