A report just released by the National Academies of Science estimates the "hidden" costs of energy production and use. These costs, which include human health effects, physical damages to buildings and other structures, and reduction in grain crop harvests caused by air pollution are not reflected in market prices of coal, oil, other energy sources, or the electricity and gasoline produced from them. Thomas McKone, a senior scientist in the Environmental Energy Technologies Division, was one of 18 distinguished experts in public health, economics, and energy science who wrote the report. More>
No mystery is bigger than dark energy — the elusive force that makes up three-quarters of the Universe and is causing it to expand at an accelerating rate. KTVU Channel 2 health and science editor John Fowler will moderate a panel of Lab scientists who use phenomena like exploding stars and gravitational lenses to explore the dark cosmos. Panelists include Saul Perlmutter (pictured), David Schlegel, and Alexie Leauthaud. This free event takes place tonight from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre (2015 Addison). More>
The Lab is implementing a six-month pilot program that expands student parking on the Hill, starting today and ending April 30. Twenty general parking permits will be issued for instances of special need, such as experiment start times beginning early in the morning and extending late into the night. To qualify, the student’s supervisor must e-mail a request to [email protected] before 3 p.m. the day prior to the desired parking date. If approved, an e-mail will be sent back to the requester, which should be forwarded to the student. The student must present the e-mail at the gate to receive a general, one-day parking pass. Only five permits per student will be issued each fiscal year, and no same-day requests will be accepted. For more information, contact Sam Houston (x4855).
To help make the Lab safer, improve the protection of the surrounding environment and enhance communications, staff are asked to fill out an Environment, Health & Safety culture survey. The survey has 48 questions and takes about 10 minutes to complete. All answers will be anonymous unless you add your name to the comments fields. The survey runs through Nov. 9.
The Property Management Division is sponsoring a fall cleanup at no cost to requesters. Facilities will be accepting electronic work request orders from until Friday, Oct. 30, with the pick-up of material starting on Nov. 2. There will be no special scheduling on any pick-up requests. All material or equipment must be less than 250 pounds and no hazardous waste or universal e-waste will be accepted. Request a pick-up online (click the "cleanup" box). Include a description of all items and attach a transportation authorization form (TAF) to all items. For information about hazardous or universal waste pick-ups, contact your Division Safety Liaison.
Earlier this month, UC President Mark Yudof created the "Commission on the Future" to look at ways the university can preserve access and quality with diminishing state support. All UC staff, including Berkeley Lab employees, are invited to participate by posting questions and comments on the commission’s website and/or attending local forums. More>
