Former Berkeley Lab Director and current U.S. Secretary of Energy Steve Chu will visit the Lab on Monday and will make a presentation and take questions from staff from 9 to 10:30 a.m. in the Building 50 Auditorium. The doors will be open between 8:30 and 8:45 a.m. only. The talk will be available via webcast here (link will be live just prior to talk). The presentation will also be simulcast in Perseverance Hall. Staff are invited to leave messages for Chu here.
Ting Xu, a polymer scientist with the Materials Sciences Division, led a study in which nanoparticles were induced to assemble themselves into complex arrays without the need for chemical modifications. In addition, she and her collaborators showed that the application of external stimuli, such as light and/or heat, can be used to further direct the assemblies of nanoparticles for even finer and more complex structural details. Xu’s collaborators included Interim Lab Director Paul Alivisatos and Jean Fréchet, also with the Materials Sciences Division. More>
The structures of biochemically related protein complexes varies from one microbe to another to a far greater extent than previously believed, according to a team of Berkeley Lab scientists led by Robert Glaeser of the Life Sciences Division. Because of this, they conclude that it is necessary to develop high-throughput technologies for imaging multiprotein complexes within microbes, rather than rely on previously determined structures. Their work, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, is part of the Protein Complex Analysis Project funded by the DOE Genomics: GTL Program. More>
To facilitate the contributions made by students, the Lab is implementing a six-month pilot program that expands student parking on the Hill. As part of the program — starting Monday and ending April 30, 2010 — 20 general parking permits will be issued daily for students to use during all hours, Monday-Friday. To qualify, the student’s supervisor, work lead or principal investigator must e-mail a request to [email protected] before 3 p.m. the day prior to the desired parking date. If approved, an e-mail will be sent back to the requester, which should be forwarded to the student. The student must present the e-mail at the gate to receive a general, one-day parking pass. Only five permits per student will be issued each fiscal year, and no same-day requests will be accepted. For more information, contact Sam Houston (x4855).
The next Women Scientists’ Council Luncheon Seminar takes place today in Perseverance Hall (Bldg. 54-130) from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The speaker is Marca Doeff, with the Materials Sciences Division. She is the principal investigator for the Batteries for Advanced Transportation Technologies program and will discuss her research on materials for battery and fuel cell applications. Networking among participants will follow and lunch will be provided. For details contact Kamala Green at x7635.
The Lab’s International Researchers and Scholars Office, part of Human Resources, is hosting a brown bag session Monday, from noon to 1 p.m. in Perseverance Hall. The gathering will provide an opportunity for employees and supervisors to ask questions regarding VISA's, Green Card applications, work permits, and other related documents. The next session will be offered on Jan. 25. For more information, contact Ben Ortega.
