When the Production Genomics Facility at the Joint Genome Institute (JGI) was struck by its 13th ergonomic injury in 2008, management knew it was time to stop work. Due to the Runaround on Friday, which starts at noon at the Fire Station, there will be no onsite shuttle bus service from about 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The offsite buses will continue service from Buildings 65 (Blue) and 74 (Green and Orange).
It is time to consider which technologies Berkeley Lab should nominate for R & D Magazine's 100 Top Technologies award. Judges evaluate both the potential societal impact and the scientific contribution a technology makes. The nomination requires significant data on a technology's performance, such as a working prototype, interaction with industry, licensing, etc. Contact Pam Seidenman by Friday to suggest a technology for consideration. Energy Secretary Steve Chu recently announced that up to $12.5 million in funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act will be awarded in early 2010 to support at least 80 graduate fellowships to U.S. students pursuing advanced degrees in science, mathematics, and engineering through the newly created Department of Energy Office of Science Graduate Fellowship program. The Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley is currently soliciting applications from graduate students with science and engineering backgrounds for its recently launched Cleantech to Market (C2M) program. The IT Division and Mathworks are sponsoring two Matlab educational sessions on Friday, Oct. 30, in Perseverance Hall. Staff who cycle to work now have some additional places to park their bikes. Six new bike racks have been installed near Buildings 2, 54, 64, 67, 70 and 71. The work was conducted by the Lab's Facilities Division.
